Thankfully, last night (St. Valentine’s Day) saw what I hope is the last of this horrible freezing cold weather that has blighted Europe over the past few weeks. I live in the countryside about 3km from the Andalucian village of Villanueva del Trabuco which is north of Malaga city and close to Antequera and we don’t normally get harsh winters, even though we are in the mountains 800m above sea level.

This year we recorded some of the highest temperatures for December since records began, it was beautiful, walking around in T shirts and shorts in December was great, the weather was like an English high summer it was that warm. Come January though, suddenly the nighttime temperatures dropped to -8ºC and froze the pipes. Daytime was bright sunshine, clear blue skies and 12ºC but a biting wind meant you need to wrap up well.

Today that biting wind has gone, well, almost and the night time low was just under 0ºC so we had no frozen pipes, we have clear blue skies and a warm 12ºC in the shade and a walk in the campo with the dog was just the thing. I think it is the nature of the British to maon about the weather but this February I would say we were well justified to do so. heres hoping!

Andalucia Properties - Too Cool for Cats

And still the cold weather continues.

Monday was not the best day for my cats as I was taking them to Alhaurin to be spayed and neutered, the fact that they had to be locked in cat boxes for the hour long journey did nothing to impress them. The fact of the matter is this; If you don’t neuter your male cats, they roam and end up as road kill or fall prey to farmers guard dogs or even worse fates. The female cats need to be spayed because just one un-spayed female cat can produce a multitude of kittens in a very short space of time, so, although they have no choice in the matter, it was the best thing for them.

To be honest, they were as good as gold all the way down from Trabuco to Alhaurin, they never cried once and afterwards, they were too groggy to make a sound and so the whole episode went quite smoothly. The next day though, the poor little moggies were crying for all they were worth because the horrible, bitter, cold weather had kicked in and frozen their food and water bowls solid.

As you can see from the photographs, you would be hard pushed to get much water off that!

If you live in Andalucia and have cats and dogs, just remember it is better to be cruel to be kind, get them spayed and neutered; you’ll save them and yourself a lot of grief.

On the way up!!!

8am February 9^th 2012 Andalucia, Spain and it’s gettingwarmer, oh yes! At 7pm it was minus bloody 9ºC. This has been a really sharpspell of cold weather, very unusual for this time of year, not just here in themountains above Malaga but for the whole of Europe. The “cold snap” as it’sbeen cold has snapped almost everything off that has been exposed. Never mind,it will soon be spring.

Chiringuitos on the Costa del Sol

Happily the fate of Costa del Sol’s Chiringuitos (beachside bars and restaurants) seems to be edging towards safety as the “Ley de Costas” or “Law of Coasts” that which regulates what happens on the shores of Spain is coming under review. Although not actually naming Chiriguitos the Minister for the Environment, M.A, Cañete outlined changes that would protect an amenity that is both traditional and popular.

Cañete has implied that until now the Ley de Costas has been applied in such an erratic manner that it neither protected the environment or the local businesses nor said the concessions will be extended past their current 15 years and that “non harmful economic activities” will be authorized.

There are also plans to help concession holders expand their business and reduce the minimum distance between each one. All this has come about due to the uncertainty over the last 8 years or so when it was suggested that the Chiringuitos would disappear or be subject to so much red tape that they would be unrecogniseable from the Chiringuitos as we know them, the question was even raised in the European Parliament.

Just on the Costa del Sol alone some 400+ businesses and over 20,000 jobs would be affected by any change in the law. Caution has been advised though by Norberto del Castillo, President of the Federation of Beach Businesses who says celebrations should be put on hold as some concessions ran out in 2004 and have not, as yet, been cleared up.

Let’s look on the bright side though. If, like me, you are a fan of Chiringuitos, such as the world famous Ayo’s Paella on Burriana Beach Nerja and La Barca a fantastic BBQ and grill restaurant then you would not want a single thing to change. Chiringuitos are part of the Spanish experience and long may they remain that way.

Weather in Spain - February gets a little cold!

Doris was not pleased with the weatherman in Malaga

Brrr! A cold weather warning has been issued as tortures dive across the whole of Europe and even here in sunny Spain we are getting unusual cold snaps. Even areas, such as Barcelona and the Basque country are getting snow, not just the inland areas of Spain. In some Northern provinces expectations of temperature as low as -11ºC are expected within the next few days.

Even here, in Malaga province and especially around Antequera and Ronda, we are expecting -4ºC falling to almost freezing point in the city. This cold snap is due to last until Sunday when we will again have our usual temperatures back.

We can’t complain though, we have just had some of the warmest December and January temperatures on record with very little rain to speak of and even here, in the heights above Malaga we have been getting daytime temperatures of º18C.

OK,Take a look at the photo I have pasted above. You don't need me to describewhat you are seeing but I will go through it with you anyway.

Whatyou are looking at is one of the most exclusive properties in the Caribbean andGulf of Mexico. This unique property has 360º views of the Caribbean Sea andthe north coast of Jamaica, although there is masses of outside space, parkingyour car might be a little tricky, extricating the car, should you ever be ableto park, will be even trickier still, walking there and back is an option but the Great White sharks do tend to 'nip'. Local fishermen will do transfers for a small fee.

Thereare no local facilities, no street lights, no sewers, no dustbin men, norunning water or mains electricity or gas; in fact, there is sod all as far asmunicipal services go.

Thebuilding itself is a “rustic” construction, made from materials found locally,the whole edifice is held together with nails, screws, string and bits ofchewing gum. The property has a problem with damp, lots of damp, in fact, youcould not get damper if you went swimming, to combat this damp, the owner hasmounted the property on a series of stilts that are as thin as Ghandies legsbut seem to do the trick as the property has not fallen into the CaribbeanSea..Yet!

It didfall into the sea in 2004 with the help of hurricane Ivan but so enamored withthe Pelican bar were the local people and businesses they clubbed together toreconstruct this local tourist attraction.

Insidethe Pelican Bar looks very much the same as outside the Pelican Bar, except youare covered by a roof (of sorts, prone to leak during the monsoons andhurricane seasons) the furniture is sparse, no modern kitchen, no classy diningarea, no cooker hood (No cooker!) The less said about the toilets the better (use your imagination!)

You cansee from the photograph another small area to one side of the Pelican bar, thisis the Honeymoon Suite, used when large wedding receptions take place at thePelican Bar. You don’t want me to describe the facilities do you?

According to the Sur in English, the free publication for English speaking expatriates in Andalucia, the good news for Andalucia tourism continues unabated into 2012.

Wednesday 18^th of January 2012 the FITUR (Feria Internacional de Tourismo) was inaugurated by the Prince and Princess of Asturias, the feria is in its 32^nd year and is one of the world’s largest tourism fairs.

We are told that the 2011 saw 500,000 more visitors to the Andalucia area of Spain which generated about 15 billion Euros in revenue and cemented Andalucia claim to being the most popular destination for tourists especially Spanish tourists. Foreign tourist visits to Andalucia have risen by an average of 3% in 2011 and the same is expected for 2012 although some areas have seen rises of up to 8%

The Junta de Andalucia head of Tourism, Luciano Alonso pointed out that the use of new technologies is one of the main reasons for the success of Andalucia in drawing in the tourists.

Frost! Oh yes, Frost!

“Frost in Andalucia? You are having a laugh!” That’s the reaction I got when I called the UK and told my folks what the weather was like in Andalucia, well, in my part of Andalucia at this present time.

We have just had one of the hottest December months on record, that is a verifiable fact, you can read it in the newspapers but we have also had some hard frost as well, this happens when you have perfectly clear skies, free of cloud.

The daytime temperatures have been hotter than the average English summer, it has been beautiful, the night time temperature drops right down, low enough to cause a hard frost and as you can see from the photo, it’s just like home.

Fortunately, once the sun has come up, the frost goes in an instant and we are back to sunny weather and ice cream cones.

I would like to add that I am 800m above sea level in the mountains of Andalucia and that the Costa del Sol does not have this sort of variable weather, nonetheless, it has been beautiful and looks like it will continue for a while longer yet.

Record breaking weather in Andalucia

New Years day 2012 - Some like it hot (Myself and a Bailey's)

I was reading in the Sur in English, the free newspaper for English Speaking Expats in the Andalucia area that December 2011 was a real record breaker being one of the hottest Decembers on record. This fantastic weather looks set to continue well into January.

Having lived in Andalucia for a decade, I am well aware of what the weather has to offer and because I live in the mountains above Malaga, about 8000ft above sea level, the weather can get a bit cold in the winter months, January being the coldest but this year it has been as hot as any English summer with shorts and a vest being the order of the day.

Christmas Day and New Years Day were so hot; we had lunch on the verandah in T-shirts. As you can see from the photo, I had to have a little "refreshment" to cool down.

Let’s hope this continues for a while more at least.

Now that we are into 2012 it’s worth noting that Gateway to Andalucia has a new crop of properties available for sale. Sunday 20th of November saw the Spanish general election and as predicted the Conservative Partido Popular (PP) or Popular Party won an overwhelming victory with an absolute majority in parliament, winning 186 out of 350 seats (with more than 95% votes cast) an so ending the rule of the PSOE (Socialist) and José Luis “Mr Bean” Zapatero.
The outcome was never in doubt it was just a matter of how much of a defeat it would be for the ruling socialist party.

Mariano Rajoy now has the unenviable job of pushing through very unpopular austerity measures and hopefully ease the problems Spain and other countries in the Euro zone face.
Mind you, I don’t suppose the likeness of Mr Rajoy and Roger Whittaker will have gone unnoticed.

View to Sierra Gorda from Los Ranos

I posted some photographs this week of Barrio Los Ranos (Area called "The Frogs") where I live. I was out walking with my dog Pablito "Pabbie" to his friends and there was a morning mist that hung over the whole area. I had my camera with me as usual and I waited for the mist to dissipate so I could get photographs as the mist cleared in different stages.

Los Ranos is near to the Andalucian white village (Pueblo Blanco) of Villanueva del Trabuco which is in the north east corner of Malaga, close to Antequera and Loja, 25 minutes now from Malaga airport, thanks to all the new roads that opened this November.

Sierra Gibalto (Camel Hump) from Cortijo de la Luz

Los Ranos, in Spanish means "The Frogs" a "Rana" is a frog but due to the Spanish language pluralising in the masculine, this becomes Los Ranos. Confused? Don´t worry about it. The area of Los Ranos is named because of the very large Frogs or Toads that come out to breed in the local streams during the rains. These little devils make a real chorus.

The barrio of Los Ranos (neighbourhood or area) is about 3Km outside of the village but less than 1km from three restaurants / bars and less than 5 minutes from the Granada - Malaga motorway. There are 4 houses in Los Ranos, 2 new buildings of about 9 years and the Cortijos of Los Ranos and de la Luz. The photographs you see are from Cortijo de la Luz, this property is now for sale.

Fuente de los Cien Caños or the "The fountain of 100 pipes" a beauty spot not far from Los Ranos that is used as a picnic area for the fiestas of San Marco and San Isidero. The whole village turns up for this great day out.

Also, there is a a shower room next to this utility room, this has just been renovated to a very high standard with new shower, shower cubicle, sinks, WC, wall mirror and lights. The floor, shower area and walls have been tiled and a new window and door installed. The Kitchen and shower room has a complete brand new roof.

There is also a small utility room for storing equipment. Outside areas include a large courtyard that leads to the rear patios and garden, this has 4 patio areas and a large garden building, suitable for a pool house, changing room or whatever. One patio area has a grapevine for shade and there are palms and a herb garden as well as a Bay tree and other plants.

There is a side strip of land that leads to the side patio area, front patio, front verandah and through the gate to the area used for parking, this can accommodate about ten cars.

This property rates are about 100€ per anum, this is for refuse collection and water. Internet costs 40€ per month and is 24 /7 broadband. There is electricity and gas via bottled gas (Hot water, cooker, showers) Satellite TV is installed.

This is a very quiet area and the house would make a great family home, it was used for a Bed and Breakfast, that gives you an idea of the size.

Los Ranos, a barrio or area where I live has huge mountain views from plains and olive groves and quite often we have an early mist followed by radiant sunshine. The effects are wonderful. You can sit and watch the mist disappear while you have your coffee.

The photgraph above is taken from a camino or country track that passes to the rear of Los Ranos and up to barrio Los Louises. There is a house for sale here, in this group of four houses and this will be on the market in December ready for the new year.

Walking back towards Los Ranos you can just make out the top of the Sierra Gordas. This is a large mountain range that dominates the landscape to the north of Malaga city. Sierra Gorda, Sierra San Jorge and Sierra Gibalto all lend their views to this area.

Man with parasol on the Costa del Sol?

There was a time when getting about Andalucia was difficult due to the size and quality of the roads and their connections. Year by year these roads have improved in size and quality and continue to do so to this day.

It was annouced in the Sur in English, a free English language newspaper for Andalucia, that the latest section of the Las Pedrizas toll road was to be opened. For those who are not familiar with this section of road, it (Las Pedrizas) splits and goes to Antequera /Cordoba / Sevilla in the left half and to Granada in the right. It is at the brow of a height that leads down to the Costa del Sol Malaga and Malaga airport.

I live near to Villanueva del Trabuco and the trip to the airport takes me 40 minutes, give or take but now, thanks to this new section and the toll road, I will be able to shave 15 to 20 minutes off this jurney.

What does this mean as far as buying and selling properties in Andalucia and Malaga province in particular? well, imagine you have planned to buy a guesthouse, bed and breakfast, small hotel or a property for rent, you now have the option of moving further inland where the prices are much lower and the cost of running such a services far cheaper but still be able to reach the coast in next to no time. Trabuco, Rosario, Loja, Granda, Antequera, Mollina and many other great places for Andalucia property just got a lot closer to the Costa del Sol.

Transfers from Malaga airport will look far more inviting when you consider a 40 minute drive has been cut to 20 minutes and even less.

The roads are faster, less steep with only a 3% rise in gradient as opposed to the long and steep rise from Casabermeja to Las Pedrizas, a trip made in 2nd gear for some vehicles.

Rural accommodation has grown by more than 40% in the last five years in Malaga province. What's so amazing about that you might ask? Property sales are up by 22 per cent in the second quarter of this year!

I read an article in the Sur in English, a well respected free paper for expats in Andalucia, that property sales were up in the second quarter of 2011 by a whopping 22 per cent. This is according to the central governments own figures.

Who is it buying all these properties? Well, according to the real estate agents analysis, it is all the foriegn tourists looking for bargain properties, they are driving the market upwards. It's not hard to see why, when the government has slashed the tax on new property purchases and there are properties offered for sale at discounts of 30% - 40% and more.

One reason for the glut of foriegn clients is the present economic uncertainty amongst Spaniards making them wary about purchasing primary homes, never mind holiday homes.

“Cash-rich buyers, especially those looking to buy at the top end of the market, are able to purchase properties 35 to 40 per cent cheaper than they were three years ago. I’d say if you can afford to buy now you should as it’s thought prices will start to creep up again soon. "
